New firmware to comply with the latest EU Security Directive RED 18031

A new firmware update is available to ensure your product is compliant with the EU EN 18031 standard under the Radio Equipment Directive for Wi-Fi enabled products. This optional firmware update disables image.canon uploads, and YouTube livestreaming via image.canon.

  • It’s good practice to keep your camera’s firmware up-to-date. Usually Canon develops new features with updated firmware, and in this case it’s to be compliant with a new EU cybersecurity regulation. Some older cameras will lose features, mainly for direct Wi-Fi connection to image.canon , while newer cameras will have more security features such as a PIN code, added to comply with the EU security directive.

  • No. For some of the earlier cameras, only connection via Wi-Fi to image.canon will no longer be available. Wi-Fi connection is still possible, and useful, to transfer images to your smartphone for example. Additionally, you can use the Camera Connect app to upload images to image.canon.

  • Please check which Canon product or products you own or use, and consider updating your firmware to comply with the EU security directive. Read around the topic and find out what features change with the compliant firmware, and we’d recommend having a search online to learn more about the EU EN 18031 cybersecurity standard.
